Want to enter the draft pool for a shot at a spot on one of our awesome MRD home teams? We'll hold tryouts for the draft pool on September 7 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., followed by a four week tryout session from September 12 through October 12. Tryouts to get into the draft pool will consist of a drill-focused practice (similar to a standard MRD practice) where we will be assessing WFTDA minimums and skater safety, as well as a quick <5 min interview. The interview portion will involve two representatives from each of our four home teams, asking a few questions to take back to the rest of their team to help get to know you all a little better.
Each home team will lead a practice as well as have a meet-and-greet to continue to get to know draft pool skaters. Details on the meet-and-greets will come later. Drafted skaters will be announced on Friday, October 13, after the four week tryout session. OFFICIAL TRYOUTS SIGN UP FORM FAQs about Tryouts Q: Can anyone try out? A: Yes, anyone can try out as long as you are 18 years or older and female or non-binary identified. If you are between the ages of 18-21, our recreational team, Wreckers Madison Roller Derby (MWD), accepts skaters aged 18 or older. Rec sessions start at various times throughout the year. For more information, hit up [email protected]. Q: What if I can't pass my WFTDA minimums or don't even know what those are? A: We are not looking for a 100% pass on WFTDA mins to get into the draft pool (WFTDA mins can be found here). We will be assessing these skills at tryouts, but first and foremost we're looking at safety on skates and ability to be trained. We are looking to take a group of skaters into the draft pool that we feel have potential to learn and be game-ready by January 2018, the beginning of MRD's home season. Q: What if I can't make the September 7 date and I still want to try out? A: The designated makeup day for tryouts is September 9 from 10:00a to 11:30 a.m. Q: How many skaters are you drafting this year? A: The number of skaters drafted varies every season based on home team needs and number of open roster spots at the time of the draft in October. A great time to ask about expected number of spots is when teams host their meet-and-greets during the draft month. Q: Do I need WFTDA insurance to try out? A: No, but you will need to sign a waiver for tryouts. If you are accepted into the draft pool, you will need to purchase WFTDA insurance.
