This executive order does nothing to protect women or girls. All it does is target and further harm a very small, already vulnerable group of people who simply want to play sports.”

While the executive order mostly focuses on school sports that accept federal funding, the wording is broad and vague enough to create a risk that local governments could ban transgender athletes from playing at certain recreational facilities. Roller derby teams have long traveled to compete with one another, and such a ban/threat creates an impossible situation for leagues attempting to determine whether a particular location will be safe or even available for all its members.

Roller derby has long recognized that true athletic fairness is achieved through training, dedication, and skill–not exclusion. The sport has pioneered inclusive policies as part of our recognition that gender diversity does not threaten competition, but rather enriches it and the experiences of everyone involved. Governing bodies such as the Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby Association (WFTDA) have led by example, proving that inclusivity and fairness can coexist in competitive, even full-contact sports.

“It’s appalling to see the language of fairness used to mask what is purely discrimination,” Larson said. “Supporting women’s sports means making sure the athletes receive equal pay, equal access, and equal funding, which is not currently the case. It means creating better systems for preventing and punishing sexual harassment and assault within sports. Instead of focusing on the real issues impacting women and girls, this administration is simply trying to erase transgender and non-binary people from public life, and further exert control over individual freedoms.”

Madison Roller Derby calls on fellow athletic organizations, lawmakers, and the public to stand against this hateful and discriminatory action, and advocate for the rights of all athletes to compete in the sports they love and as their full, authentic selves.

Media Contacts:
media@madisonrollerderby.org
executivedirector@madisonrollerderby.org

Madison Roller Derby announces Season 19 game and tournament dates

https://www.madisonrollerderby.org/news/madison-roller-derby-announces-season-19-game-and-tournament-dates

https://www.madisonrollerderby.org/news/madison-roller-derby-announces-season-19-game-and-tournament-dates#comments

Uncategorized

MADISON, WIS - Madison’s premier roller derby league, Madison Roller Derby, is thrilled to announce the dates of their nineteenth season, including the return of their invitational tournament, Udder Chaos. Following the guidelines of the sport's governing body, the Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby Association (WFTDA), the league decided it was best to cancel our 2021 game season entirely and, for the time being, all practices and in-person events. MRD takes its role as a responsible community member seriously and wants to do everything in our power to ensure the health and safety of our members, our fans, and our community at large.

With that in mind, we are also humbly asking that anyone who is able please consider donating directly to our league in lieu of attending our games. We’re hopeful, though, that with support from the community and our many skaters and volunteers, we’ll be able to keep rolling for many years to come.

MRD wishes to thank all our incredible fans and supporters. We look forward to the day when we can all safely skate again and welcome back our roller derby fans! The Unholy Rollers quickly asserted their dominance when in the 3rd jam of the night, Shananaguns picked up 26 points to the Vixen’s 8. The Unholies would also go on to grab lead jammer in 9 of the next 10 jams. During that time, jammer penalties played a role in the happenings on the track. Over a stretch of five jams, both teams had opportunities to start with a power jam. It was the Unholy Rollers who capitalized on those opportunities and went on a 64-8 run. The dominant scoring didn’t stop there though. In back to back to back jams, Gingah Snap picked up 16 points, Tango de Muerte picked up 20, and Gertrude Awakening picked up 19 while their blockers in front held the Vixens scoreless. The half ended with the Unholy rollers with the commanding 187-49 lead.

In the second half, the Vixens changed their jammer rotation and inserted Jostlin’ Hell and LaMarche Madness into their rotation. The Unholy Rollers’ blockers were ready and continued to make life difficult for the Vixens’ jammers. In the 4th jam, the Unholy’s jammer went to the penalty box on two separate penalties yet the Unholy’s blockers – Hell Woods, *Kel*Fire*Warrior*, The Manipulator, and Goldman Smacks held the Vixens to only 4 points in that jam. It was in the 9th jam of the half that the Vixens would put up their highest scoring jam of the night with 16 points from LaMarche Madness. The Vixens would also get some strong play from their blockers in the 12thjam of the half. Vixen blockers Bonnie Riot, DieAFram, Slam Chowdah, and Hoppe Go Lucky held the Unholy Rollers to just 2 points. And in the 18th jam those same Vixen’s blockers held the Unholies scoreless. At the end of the night, the Unholies were just too much for the Vixens as the Vixens fell to the Unholies, 134-340.

Quad Squad, 238 vs The Reservoir Dolls, 97

For the final game of the night, the 1-1 Quad Squad took on the 0-2 Reservoir Dolls. The Quad Squad jammers picked up lead in 6 of the first 7 jams and played keep-away with the Res Dolls limiting their ability to score. After 7 jams, the Quad Squad had a 38-7 lead. The Reservoir Dolls weren’t going down without a fight, however. In the 9th jam, foster skater Riotchu picked up 12 points while her blockers held the Quad Squad jammer scoreless. The Reservoir Dolls were back in this one, 39-22. The Quad Squad responded and showed that they could post the big numbers, too. Hammer Abby picked up 17 in the 11th jam with a little offensive help from teammate Allie Gator. In the 15th, Quad Squad jammer Darkhorse had the biggest jam of the half grabbing 24 unanswered points. In the next jam, Hammer Abby wowed the crowd with not one but two apex jumps and another 12 points! At the half, The Quad Squad had built up a 136-51 lead.

In the second half, it was back to being a game of keep-away as Quad Squad jammers dominated off the jam line then calling the jam before the Reservoir Dolls could score. In the 7th jam, with two of their blockers in the penalty box, Quad Squad Blockers Crystal Ice and Battle Frog were able to hold the Reservoir Dolls jammer in the pack as they waited for their friends to return. In the meantime, Quad Squad Jammer Pied Typer was through the pack 4 times grabbing lead and another 12 unanswered points. Steadily the Quad Squad built on their lead but the Reservoir Dolls jammers consistently forced the call-off limiting the points that the Quad Squad would put up with each jam. The game ended with Quad Squad on top, 238 – 97.

BOUT PREVIEW - GAME 3 MARCH 9TH!

https://www.madisonrollerderby.org/news/bout-preview-game-3-march-9th

https://www.madisonrollerderby.org/news/bout-preview-game-3-march-9th#comments

News

Game 3 and the game that will decide rankings for Semi-Finals will be this Saturday, March 9th! Quad Squad blockers locked down the Vixens’ jammers and held them to only 5 points through 8 jams. The Vixens tried to regroup and slow things down with a time-out but following the short break, the Quad Squad blockers – Lex Aeternitas, Mikki Barrage, Sequin DestroyHer, and Darkhorse – continued their tight blocking which would frustrate the Vixens’ jammers all half. Penalties in the 10th jam for both teams resulted in the highest scoring jam of the half as Kenna Vendetta (Quad Squad) and Hawai’i KO (Vaudeville Vixens) each picked up 16 points. The Quad Squad looked like they were playing ‘keep-away’ as their jammers picked up lead 15 times and their blockers held the Vixens scoreless in 14 of 22 jams in the 1st half. The score at half-time: Vixens 63, Quad Squad 138.

The second half started much like the first. Quad Squad jammers consistently grabbed lead and minimized the Vixens’ ability to score. The Vixens weren’t going down without a fight, however. In the 10th jam of the second half, Vixens’ jammer Jostlin’ Hell took full advantage of a power jam and picked up 19 points for her team. Two jams later, LaMarche Madness grabbed 20 points with some strong blocking from her Vixen teammates Radiosmacktive, Hoppe Go Lucky, Bonnie Riot, and Ms. Conduct. In the very next jam, Kentucky Fried Carnage of the Quad Squad put up 12 points and thrilled the crowd when she surprised the Vixens’ jammer and knocked her out of bounds! The exciting come-back that the Vixens experienced in week one wasn’t to be repeated this time as the Quad Squad were just too dominant this time around. The Vaudeville Vixens fell to the Quad Squad, 143-252.

Unholy Rollers 409, Reservoir Dolls 189 - View Replay Here

The second bout of the night pitted the Reservoir Dolls (0-1) against the Unholy Rollers (1-0). Very quickly, the bout showed that it was going to be a night of big hits and big jams. In the second jam, the Unholy Rollers capitalized on the Reservoir Dolls’ jammer penalty and tallied 24 points from Gingah Snap. Two jams later, Unholy Rollers’ blocker Rhubarbarian laid a big hit on the Res Dolls’ rookie jammer, Hollyhood just as she looked to be escaping the pack. In the 6th jam, Gingah Snap again took advantage of a power jam and some strong offensive help from teammate The Manipulator and posted a staggering 28 points! In the 12th jam of the half, the crowd was again excited to see some jammer-on-jammer fun as Unholy’s jammer Shananaguns took out the Res Dolls jammer. From the strong defense from Unholy Rollers Rhubarbarian, Toast, Goldman Smacks, and Scarlet O’Snareya in one jam to more strong blocking from Dive Hard, Badaboom Box, Hell Woods, and Gertrude Awakening, the Unholies were proving to be nightmares for the Reservoir Dolls’ jammers. Offensively, the Unholies posted 20 or more points in 6 of 16 jams in the half. By half-time,2019 the Unholy Rollers had a commanding 223-74 lead.

In the second half, the determined Reservoir Dolls hung with the Unholies for the first 5 jams. Then in the 6th jam, Gingah Snap posted another 24 point jam. She would go on to lead all jammers that night with 140 points. Strong as the Unholies were, the Reservoir Dolls put up points in all but 4 jams in the half. Nat Splat posted 19 points for the Reservoir Dolls in the 15th jam of the half. On the stat sheet, the Reservoir Dolls picked up more points in the second half than the first and reduced the number of points scored by the Unholy Rollers. In the end however, the experience and depth of the Unholy Rollers was just too much. The Unholy Rollers skated away with the victory 409-189.
